2018 World Cup Language: Last Gasp
This phrase featured in yesterday’s thrilling game between Belgium and Japan. Gasp is a breath, a desperate one. For example, if someone is in the sea and sinking underneath, going down under the waves, they may gasp for air. They are desperate to breathe in air. Using ‘last’ makes this even more desperate, it is the last chance to get some air, the last chance to survive.
