After 80 minutes in which very little happened it appeared the game was going to extra time but three goals in the final ten minutes saw Spain qualify for their first ever final. The first of these three goals was scored in the 80th minute and was described by the BBC as 'sparking the game into life' which suggests that this was the beginning of the excitement.

Colombia continued their amazing tournament with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Jamaica in the last-16 game in Melbourne. The winner came in the second half when Usme controlled a wonderful cross-field pass before curling the ball into the net for the winner. Her control was great - another way of saying this is 'to take the ball down' - and then her shot was hit with accuracy as she bent or curled the ball past the keeper. When a player curls the ball they make it move in a different direction (either out to in or sometimes in to out). A curling shot is often more difficult for a keeper to save as the ball starts wide and then moves towards the goal.

In the headline from the BBC website, the goalscorer curled home the decisive strike which means she scored the winning goal (when a player hits home the ball it means they have scored a goal), while a decisive strike is one that wins a game - the goal decided the match.

Catalina Usme, who captained Colombia in Melbourne, curled home the decisive strike in the 51st minute.

When a big team are knocked out of a competition we sometimes describe it as them 'crashing out' of the tournament. So, when Germany, one of the favourites for the tournament, were eliminated the ESPN website used this phrase:

The England player deliberately stood on, stamped on, Nigerian defender Michelle Alozie and was given her marching orders. Many pundits said the red mist had descended, meaning James had got so angry she couldn't control her actions.

This is how The Age online described it: 'James had, in a flash of red mist, morphed from the superstar of this tournament into a villain.'

England went on to win the game on penalties 4-2, but were very lucky indeed to get the win.

The holders of the Women's World Cup (and fourtime winners), the USA, were almost dumped out of the competition when Portugal hit the post in the last minute of the game. If the ball had gone in, then the Portuguese side would have won 1-0 and leapfrogged over the US team to finish second in the group behind the Netherlands.

Many TV comemntators and news reports suggested that only the width of the post kept the US team in the competition. This phrase uses the noun form 'width' (from the adjective 'wide') to show how close a team were to scoring a goal or in this case, staying in the competition. Sometimes we might also see/hear mesurements such as millimetres or inches to describe how close something was to happening.

England won their second World Cup group game 1-0 against Denmark thanks to a wonderful strike from their new star, Lauren James. She is seen as a match winner for the Lionesses and because she is so good some of her team mates have called her 'a cheat code' which is a reference taken from gaming. A cheat code is something within the game (the code) that can change the characteristics of the game so that the player can win more easily so because James is such a good player and she can make it easier for England to win she has been nicknamed 'cheat code'.

Here's a comment from the Guardian newspaper describing Lauren James:

Despite being involved in the senior setup for just under a year, she is, as Leah Williamson so aptly put it, their “cheat code”

Asisat Oshoala scored after a mix-up between Australia's Alanna Kennedy and Mackenzie Arnold

A mix-up is when someone (or in this case more than one person) makes a mistake but probably that this mistake was easily avoidable. Maybe there is a mix-up in communication which is where one person doesn't fully understand another person and this is what happened in the Australian defence when the defender Kennedy and the keeper Arnold both went for the same ball - they didn't communicate clearly and this allowed the Nigerian player Oshoala to score. Because of this mix-up they conceded a goal.
