What is the actual meaning of the words "bodies" and "numbers" in football? Croatia have upped the tempo but Spain are getting bodies back and defending in numbers. Is there another twist in this? We're into the last Leeds are preparing to make their third change of the match during a very open period where both teams are committing numbers in the final third of the field. All-action here.

Bodies here means players so in the first example Spain have managed to bring back players to defend.

To defend in numbers means to have lots of players back to help the the team when the opponents are attacking. If a team defends in lots of numbers then we might also hear the phrase 'park the bus'.

If a team commits numbers (usually used when attacking) it means that lots of players are involved in the attack. If both teams are commiting numbers it means that the two sides are attacking.
