To condemn = to sentence in a legal context
To condemn to a defeat means that one team has defeated another team. West Ham condemned Tottenham to a defeat means that Spurs lost again and it was because of West Ham.

If a team is described as 'sorry' it means that they have not played well at all.
- A sorry performance - played really badly
- A sorry defeat - they were easily defeated (and didn't really fight)
