I know that these are all connected to trying to beat the keeper over their heads but what other differences are there between these words (Dink, Lob and Chip)?

Yes, these words are all connected to beating the keeper over his/her head - so this means that a player is trying to lift or raise the ball. If you do this when the ball is on the ground this is known as a chip (or sometimes the word 'clip' is used), while if the ball is off the ground then 'lob' would be used. A dink is like a chip/clip combination and suggests that a player is delicately trying to do this.

Some possible examples

  1. A deft chip
  2. A delicate lob
  3. A cheeky chip
  4. To dink over the keeper
