What is the meaning of the phrase "draw men" in this context? When I read a football report, I often see the words like "...beats the first man" and "the last men" used. I don't understand what it means. 62 min: Lingard is electric in full flow. He glides down the middle of the park, drawing a couple of men before flicking insouciantly towards Fornals to his left. Fornals has the opportunity to drive at a Chelsea defence that’s been pulled out of shape, but forgets to take the ball with him. West Ham are playing well.
To draw a man/to draw a player is a way of making an opposition player move towards the ball so that the attacking player can then either dribble around them or release a pass now that they are out of position.
In the example above, Lingaard waits for the opposition players to come towards him so that he can release the pass to a team mate.
Thank you so much
