What does "force" mean?
Mane forces Oxlade-Chamberlain wide but the England midfielder still gets a good cross in which Francis heads away. Liverpool have picked up where they left off - on the front foot.
38 min: United 0-0 Newcastle
Saint-Maximin forces a shot wide and De Gea sends a goal kick upfield to put United back in attacking form.
Burnley vs West Ham
55' West Ham force a corner, but Pope clears it and the follow up cross comes to nothing. 0-0
Liverpool 0-1 Chelsea (35 mins)
Chelsea are piling on the pressure here. Romelu Lukaku shakes off Joel Matip and feeds Mason Mount, who beats Trent Alexander-Arnold and forces an excellent low save from Alisson.
79: Save! Ward-Prowse lifts the ball over the wall and hits the target. De Gea is forced into action and it probably should be a comfortable save, but unconvetionally, he punches
This is a good question as we have lots of different examples of the verb 'force'.
Example 1: Force wide
This means the defender makes the attacker move away from the goal; they have forced them wide (away from danger).
Example 2: Force a shot wide
This time the verb describes the shot from the player - it was a hard shot that missed the goal.
Example 3: Force a corner
In this expression, the attacking team has put pressure on the opposition making them concede a corner.Â
Example 4: Force a save
Here the attacking side have made the goalkeeper make a save which suggests that the shot was on target and maybe going in to the net.
Example 5: Force into action
This is similar to the previous example as the attacker shoots and makes the keeper make a save.

Thanks a lot for the explanation, Damian.
