I have seen the word 'nightmare' in football - when do we use the word 'nightmare' in football?

A nightmare in football means a player has had a really bad game. Maybe the keeper has dropped the ball into the net (a gaffe) or a defender has given the ball away (a howler).

We sometimes hear the shortened version 'mare'; 'the player has had a mare'
