What does "up" actually mean in football? 1' - We're underway at Anfield. UP THE REDS!! Greenwood runs up the pitch with the ball. Mata offering support. Leicester defending well enough. Man City pressing Man Utd high up the pitch

The example of 'Up the Reds' has 'up' used as part of a slogan or shout. It means 'Come on Liverpool!' ie. I hope my team wins. I imagine the 'up' refers to a wish for action, as 'be up for it' means ready to fight/play, and 'up and running' is ready to go...
The other two examples have 'up' as for direction - run up & high up, position.
