What does "work" exactly mean in this sentence?
Aberdeen control a period of possession, but without working Dennis.

To work a defence or a player means to make them work (i.e. defend or save a shot). Here, I think the example means to work the keeper which means that a team is taking a lot of shots on goal. So, in this example, they are not really troubling the keeper.

Here's an example from the Darlington manager after his side failed to score a goal. His team didn't have enough shots on target.Â
Terry: We didn't work the keeper enough
