Today’s Euro 2012 football phrase is ‘to silence the critics’, which means to hit back; to stop your attackers from criticising you. Critics are people who judge the merits of something for example, food, literature, film, music or even football and though these people do offer positive comments more often than not it is often associated with negative feedback. So, for example Russian star Andrei Arshavin has been criticised for recent poor performances but he has said that he aims to silence his critics by performing well at the European championships. He hopes to silence his critics.
