Kickstart their campaign: Hosts Germany had a wonderful win in the opening game of the 2024 European Championship when they thrashed Scotland 5-1. We use the phrase kickstart when talking about starting a motorbike for example – we need to kick a lever to help it start. To kickstart then means to get something going; maybe something is not going so well but then it kickstarts into action and performs better. Before the 2024 Euros there had been some questions and doubts about the German national team but after their victory against Scotland in their opening game these doubts were forgotten. Not only was the result a good one but they way they played made fans feel optimistic about their chances in this tournament. The word ‘campaign‘ refers to the rest of the tournament and so to kickstart their campaign means they started their tournament well.
