Football Glossary: Debut

Debut

To play or to make an appearance for the first time e.g. a debut game or a debut season. It can be used as a verb or as a noun.

  • Example: Wayne Rooney made his debut for Everton when he was just 16 years old.
  • Example: José Mourinho’s debut season at Chelsea in 2004-05 was a successful one winning the league title.
  • Example: Laura Blindkilde Brown made her senior England debut in Tuesday’s international friendly against Switzerland.
  • Example: One player to impress was Arsenal’s gifted teenage full-back Myles Lewis-Skelly, who marked a dream debut by scoring the first goal.
