Football Glossary: Last Gasp

Last Gasp

last-gaspIf something happens in the last minutes or seconds of a game it is known as last-gasp (e.g. a last-gasp equaliser, last-gasp goal, last-gasp winner). The last-gasp refers to the final breath so in football it means the very end of the match, right at the end of the game.
  • Example: Steven Gerrard scored a dramatic last-gasp equaliser against West Ham in the 120th minute of the 2007 FA Cup final.
  • Example: The striker netted a last-gasp winner in the 93rd minute.
  • Example: Last-gasp Coutinho and Neymar goals give Brazil victory (BBC.co.uk, 2018 June 22nd).
