Football Language: To Sit Up Nicely

Football Language:A To Sit Up Nicely

sit up nicely
This footballing phrase is used to describe the situation when the ball is in a good position to shoot. To sit, means to sit in a chair for example, but also to be or stay in a position. To sit up, in football, means that the ball has bounced in front a player. It is in a perfect position to strike, to shoot, the ball. The ‘nicely‘ at the end of the phrase is almost always used with ‘to sit up’ in football. So, if a ball sits up nicely, it means that the player will shoot. There is a feeling that they will probably hit the ball well.
    • Example: Xherdan Shaqiri sent in a teasing cross towards Marco Arnautovic but the ball sat up nicely for Allen to poke the ball home. From Talksport
