Studs
Studs form part of the player’s football boots – they can be found on the sole, which is the underside, of the boot – and they help to maintain a player’s balance by gripping the pitch. In American sport they are called cleats. Players have to be careful when tackling or challenging another player as their studs may cause an injury. Indeed, if a player shows his or her studs in a tackle he or she could be sent off for dangerous play. This is known as a studs-up challenge, which is similar to an over-the-ball tackle, which can be very dangerous.
- Example: Players had to change their boots soon after the game started as their studs were unable to grip very well.
- Example: The player was sent off after a studs-up challenge on the young defender
In Poland we call it “korek”, just like a “cork” of bottle of wine 🙂 And the shoes especially designed for playing football are called “korki” 🙂
