Podcast 5 – Vocabulary

Here are some of the words and phrases used in languagecaster’s week 5 podcast.

  • a stand off – an unresolved disagreement, deadlock

Vicente is involved in a stand off with his club and may be looking for a transfer

  • crunch game – vital match, very important game

England have been hit by a number of injuries before their crunch games against Israel and Russia.

  • impetuous – hasty, unthinking, violent

Craig Fagan was banned for four games after his impetuous stamp on Arbeloa.

  • to sum up – summarise

How would you sum up the Republic of Ireland’s campaign so far?

  • to call for (his) head – ask for someone to resign, demand someone quits

After Ireland’s game against Cyprus many people were calling for Steve Staunton’s head.

  • to find (your) feet – to become accustomed to (usually a job), become familiar with

Staunton has been learning on the job and finding his feet.

  • light at the end of the tunnel – hope, an end to bad times

There is light at the end of the tunnel for Ireland and Steve Staunton.

  • an albatross around a neck – something that keeps giving you problems, a problem that won’t go away

Ireland’s away form is an albatross around their necks.

  • to bail out – to rescue

Shay Given has bailed out the national side on numerous occasions.

  • a host of – a lot of, many

England have a host of injuries.

  • a blast from the past – something that strongly reminds you of the past

Will McClaren play that blast from the past, Emile Heskey?
