The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Manchester City, Di Canio and Istanbul crowd trouble

In this week’s football review section we look back at some of the big stories from the world of football to help learners of English improve their vocabulary. Good

A great weekend for Manchester City and their fans as they thrashed their local rivals Manchester United 4-1 to move into the top three of the Premier League table. The Sky Blues completed overran United with two goals from Argentinian star Aguero and one each from Nasri and Yaya Toure, with only a late goal from Wayne RooneyA  offering any consolation to United fans.

Bad

No one likes to see any manager fired, particularly after only five games into the new season, but not many fans can claim to have been that surprised at Paolo Di Canio’s sacking from Premier League side Sunderland at the weekend. His team had only picked up one point since the start of the season, while it appeared that the Italian had lost the dressing room to become the first manager to lose his job in the Premier League this season.

A Ugly

Crowd trouble at the Besiktas versus Galatasaray Turkish Super Lig match last weekend at the Olympic Stadium in Istanbul forced the abandonment of the game in the 93rd minute. The violence appeared to have been sparked by Galatasaray’s Brazilian midfielder Felipe Melo’s red card with bottles being thrown and then fans running on to the pitch causing the referee to cancel the game. Very ugly scenes ensued afterwards with fans fighting with police.
