Football Vocabulary – Week 12

Here are some of the words and phrases that were used in this week’s podcast (January 18th 2007).

  • on the trot: in a row, consecutively
    e.g. Inter Milan have won 12 games on the trot in Serie A.
  • dodgy: not so good, under pressure
    e.g. Aston Villa are looking pretty dodgy at the moment with no wins in 12 games.
  • lucky streak: to have good luck for a certain period of time.
    e.g. Damon’s lucky streak continued in the predictions race this week.
  • poll: a survey, a way of finding out opinions
    e.g. A recent poll suggested that Steven Gerrard was the best midfielder in the Premiership.
  • bad-mouth: to say something bad against someone.
    e.g. The Real Madrid president bad-mouthed David Beckham last week.
  • have the sign over: to always do well against another team
    e.g. Chelsea have the sign over Liverpool in recent League meetings.
  • bizarre: strange, weird, very unusual
    e.g. To see Sylvester Stallone at Everton’s game last week was bizarre indeed.
  • needle: a feeling of nastiness between two teams
    e.g. There is always a lot of needle when Arsenal play against Manchester United.
  • fallen giants: once a big team but now going through a bad time.
    e.g. Two fallen giants play each other in Serie A this week: AC Milan and Lazio.
  • home banker: the home team should win easily.
    e.g. Barcelona play Gimnastic at the Nou Camp which should be a home banker.
