Vocabulary – Week 23

Here are some of the words and phrases that we used on this week’s show.

  • all heart – very kind, always thinking about other people

Liverpool are all heart (Damon suggests that Liverpool’s draw with Luton was to help the smaller club with money).

  • convincing – persuasive, strong

Espanyol had a convincing win last week.

  • don’t give two (*** usually profane word ***) – don’t care about, think something is not improtant

Kitson of Reading said he didn’t give two *** about the FA Cup.

  • to thump – to hit, or to beat convincingly / easily with a lot of goals

Blackburn were thumped by Coventry in the FA Cup.

  • thrills and spills – excitement, lots of action

There were thrills and spills, a wonderful tournament.

  • tenure – length of time in a job

It looks as though managers’ tenure is getting shorter and shorter every year that goes past.

  • to pan out – to finish (usually successfully)

How do you see Manchester United’s season panning out?

  • complacency – feeling smug, too confident

I think complacency has struck United on a couple of occasions.

  • to deride – to make fun of, to dismiss as unimportant, ridicule

A lot of people deride the League Cup (Carling Cup).

  • second string – the second team, a weakened team

I’m not a believer in sending out second strings (in the FA Cup).
