Vocabulary – Week 30

Here are some of the words and phrases that we used on this week’s show.

  • to drop points – to not win

Many top teams in Europe dropped points over the weekend

  • to take scalps – when a smaller team beats a bigger team

Huracan have taken some big scalps in the Argentinian league already this season.

  • To be sectioned – to be taken into a mental institution

Paul Gascoigne was sectioned by the authorities last week.

  • A hangout – a place where people can relax

The owner went down to a typical Liverpool hangout to speak to fans

  • To have too much for – to be too strong

I think Barcelona will have too much for Celtic in their Champions League tie.

  • To be off the mark – to be wrong

I was off the mark in my prediction about

  • To be spot on – to be exactly right

Damon was spot on with his prediction about Bolton.

  • Resurgent – to be doing well again, to come back

After a poor start a resurgent Sevilla side have moved back into the top 6 in Spain.

  • To have a soft spot for – to like something (though not always made clear)

Damon has a soft spot for Cruz Azul

  • A sticky patch – to not be playing well for a while

Real Madrid are going through a sticky patch at the moment.

  • To host – to be the home team in a game

Real Madrid host Roma in the Champions League.

  • To be drained – to be exhausted

Arsenal may be emotionally drained after Eduardo’s injury

  • To dent (hopes) – to damage another team’s hopes

Schalke could not dent Bayern’s title hopes last week.
