Vocabulary – Week 37

  • torrid – full of problems and difficulties

Valencia have had a torrid season – absolutely wretched season.

  • vaguely – slightly, a little, faintly

‘Have you heard of Queen of the South?’ ‘Yes, vaguely – distant memory.’

  • humdinger – a really exciting game, full of excitement.

Queen of the South beat Aberdeen 4-3 in a humdinger of a game.’

  • odds on – most likely to win, a good bet, favourites

Manchester United look odds on to be Premier League champions again.

  • to bounce back – to recover quickly, to improve quickly

Shalke bounce back after losing in the Champions League and the Bundesliga, and they thrashed Cottbus 5-0.

  • to bear in mind – remember, also, think about

Bear in mind Shalke lost their manager, too So that’s a very good result.

  • mudslinging – use of insults, the attempts to damage people’s reputations

In Liverpool, boardroom arguments, mudslinging: George Gillet, Tom Hicks and Rick Parry – everyone’s lying…

  • allegedly – supposedly, apparently, some people say

Allegedly there was some fighting in the tunnel after the Rangers Celtic match.

  • currently – at the moment, at the present time

Five teams are currently locked in a relegation battle in the Bundelsiga.

  • fragile – delicate, psychologically weak

Everyone’s going to be watching Arsenal (against Reading) to see how fragile they really are.
