One-way traffic describes a match where one team is constantly attacking and the other simply cannot get out of their own half (one team dominating the other).

What does it mean?

If a game is described as one-way traffic, one team dominates territory and possession so completely that their opponents struggle to mount any attacks of their own.

Examples

  1. It was one-way traffic in the second half as the home side searched for a winner.
  2. Despite 32 shots, they couldn’t find a way through – it was one-way traffic without a breakthrough.
  3. ‘Almost from that point onwards, it was one-way traffic as Turkey piled forward in search of an equaliser.’ (BBC, June 19 2026)
