This week’s English for football phrase is ‘To salvage a point’. This phrase is made up from the verb ‘to salvage‘ which means to save and ‘a point‘ which is what each team receives when they draw a league game. The idea of ‘salvage’ suggests that the team may have either had some luck in scoring the equaliser or that their goal came very late. When a team earns a point it is slightly different from salvaging a point as it suggests that the team has worked hard and deserved their point. This weekend Chelsea salvaged a point when they equalised in the last minute against West Bromwich Albion – rather controversially salvaging a point. To salvage a point.
