Why not try our World Cup Word Quiz, too, to see how well you know your football language!World Cup Phrase – Flagged for offside
In order for the referee to see if a player is offside or not during a game the assistant referee raises his or her flag to attract the referee’s attention. So if a player has strayed offside or been caught offside we can say that he or she has been flagged offside or flagged for offside.
- Example: The Netherlands were flagged for offside 12 times during their quarter-final match against Costa Rica
- Example: The referee’s assistant flagged for offside and so the goal was disallowed
