What do "meet and "swoop in" mean here? Incidentally, to gather has the same meaning as "to collect" or "to cacth", doesn't it? Jelavic meets Payet's corner but Pantilimon leaps to gather the Croatian's header. The hammers are level. Pantilimon can't hold Lanzini's shot and Payet swoops in to slot home.

To gather does mean collect the ball here.
To meet a cross means that the player has reached the ball probably with his head
To swoop in means to get to the ball before another player - some birds swoop which means to move somewhere quickly. A similar word here could be to dart - the player darted behind the defence to score.
