One of the most popular words from this week’s football has been
rabona. Tottenham’s Erik Lamela scored with one in a Europa League game. The ball landed at his right foot but instead of using this foot to strike the ball he wrapped his left foot around the back of the right one to shoot. This is a difficult skill, as players need balance, technique and confidence to make the
rabona work. Lamela had all three as his
rabona shot flew into the net.
Rabonas can be used to shoot or pass the ball, and they often surprise the defender, who expects the attaker to use the more obvious foot.
Rabona.
