This weeka€™s English for Football phrase is a€˜a turn up for the booksa€˜. This phrase is used when you want to say the result of a match was surprising or unexpected. The phrasal verb, to turn up, means to arrive or appear unexpectedly. The final part of this phrase, ‘the books‘ refers to the records or information ofA ‘bookies‘ – a casual word for people or companies that take bets on sports, especially horse racing. At the beginning of the season in la Liga, Hercules beat Barcelona, and last week West Brom beat Arsenal in the Premier League. Both results were a surprise, they were both unexpected, each one was a turn up for the books.
